We currently purchase pure-bred American Aberdeen Angus weaned calves in November from a grass-based farm in Vermont. We rotationally graze them on our farm and two of our abutting neighbors’ farms for 18-24 months. Throughout the growing season, we move our cattle to fresh pastures every 1-3 days. This keeps them growing on the highest quality forage and allows them to stay ahead of parasite cycles, which also means we do not have to feed them corn or soybeans to get them to gain weight and we don’t have to use toxic de-wormers or antibiotics to keep them healthy. American Aberdeen cattle are born and bred to provide high-quality beef on grass forages. They are typically 5/8 the size of your average commercial cow, but they have the highest meat to bone ratio of any other breed.
Logistics
We sell our beef by the whole and half animal
We bring the live animal to be processed at Lemay's Butcher in Goffstown and then the meat comes back to the farm for customer pickup
We charge by the hanging weight (the weight of the skinned, dressed carcass)
We typically collect a deposit in the spring, and the beef is typically ready in the fall
A whole cow usually takes up 8.5 cubic feet of freezer space, tightly packed
